Cusco V. Lima Futbol

03/15/2009

Randomly we were informed of a soccer game by a cab driver. We had gone out to the airport to change out outbound tickets and were on our way back to our hostel. The cab driver was talking to Adrial so fast that none of us could piece a single coherent word together. After about five minutes of jabbering at us Adrial finally figured out there was a futbol game that after noon at the local stadium. We called up our friend Luis and he said he was already planning on going with his son Rumi and his girlfriend. He agreed to meet us at our hostel before the game.
Game time and Jammie was still feeling a little wiped out so she decided to take a nap and Adrial and I left for the game armed with beer and snacks. This was our first time meeting Luis's little four year old after hearing so much about him on our trek. He was a handful to say the least. His first question was whether Adrial and I were famous stars because we were white like to people in his mountain bike videos. Dismayed that he was not in the presence of greatness he began talking about his bike, doing jumps and his favorite video stars.
The stadium was a free for all with ticket vendors wandering though the crowd outside selling 8 and 15 Sol tickets. Luis negotiated for our tickets and we worked our way toward our section. The game had already started by the time we found good seats and we began cheering madly for the Furja Roja or Red Fury, Cusco's team.
What a scene! Whole sections were jumping up and down steadily, banging drums, blowing horns and lighting off mini bombs. Lima scored and early goal but Cusco tied up the game before half time.
At half time riot police flood onto the field to protect the opposing team from any and all object hurled by the crowd. The police formed a literal tunnel for the team to walk through to their dressing rooms. The second half passed uneventfully and the game ended with a tie one to one. This was an awesome experience to have lucked onto.
We headed back to the hostel with the other 15,000 odd fans.
