Kila-Leufu Organic Farm

02/10/2009 - 02/16/2009

Kila-Leufu is the most amazing place. This Mapuche (local indigenous peoples) farm also operates as a guest house. The woman who runs the place, Irma, is the consummate host and made us feel right at home despite the fact that she spoke no English. The farm is located about 30 Km east of Pucon in a lush river valley with views of three different volcanoes including Lanin and Villarica. There is hiking, fishing, biking, horse riding and more offered in the area.
The first day we walked down to the river and had a picnic lunch while Ben did some fly fishing. We saw hawks hunting in the fields and fish jumping in the river. As the rush of Pucon faded in our minds we felt like we could fully relax here.
The second day we headed up to one of the many natural host springs in the area. All of these are developed to a certain extent and some are better than others offering hotter water, restaurants, massage and spa treatments. The first one we visited was Termas San Luis about 10-15 Km from the farm. The pool was not very hot, but was pleasant and the restaurant was good and pretty cheap.
The third day we tried to go to another hot springs but ended up trapped in Pucon for the afternoon because we missed the bus up to Termas Los Pozones.
The next day Ben had to leave in the morning so Jammie and I tried to get to Los Pozones again, this time successfully. This thermal pool is really five pools and is far more natural than the rest. The water is very hot and the surrounding indescribably beautiful.
The fifth day we went for a horse back ride up into the mountains through jungles, fields, forests and finally up to our guides house high on the mountain side. We returned very sore and tired from this adventure.
Our last day we just relaxed and recuperated from our stay at this very special place.
Each night you stay here you have the opportunity to eat a magnificent and traditional meal prepared by Irma, who is a whiz in the kitchen. The other guests are really interesting and dinners become a source of conversation and fun.
We will be rturning here someday soon!
